Betty Dodson and Carlin Ross made a video for No Make-up Week and it is 1,000% worth watching. Betty Mother Fucking Dodson! Hearing a feminist icon say that she has problems with the social pressures of make-up is somehow freeing. Like, yeah, no this is a real thing. So, I’m not weak or flawed or whatever for having issues with make-up. Because of these social pressures, whether form culture or family, it is so hard for any of us to have a good relationship to cosmetics. It’s not a given–and whether you wear make-up or not there is a story there.
As Betty says, she and Carlin have resisted the social pressures of sex their entire lives, but make-up is still an issue. I found this especially interesting, and it sparked that question again: what is the relationship between sex and make-up? Check out Dodson and Ross where the duo continually explore women’s relationships to s ex, money, power and advance the way we love, create, govern and raise the next generation.

Oh I love this!!! Delightful. I’ve been staring at my make-up free pic on facebook all week and I look so washed out and tired! But content, at peace.
Neat!
I’ve been thinking through every post that’s it’s interesting that I don’t ever wear make-up, but I still feel like No Make-Up Week is “for me”.
Good on you for it, by the way!
Thanks for this, Rachel, Dodson & Ross, and everyone who participated in No Make-up Week. It’s exactly what I needed. Also, congrats on the HuffPo feature.
